The 1st Annual O'Brien Clan Pilgrimage to the Brian Boru Trail was in April 2014 to commemorate the 1,000 year anniversary of the death of Brian Boru on the battlefield at Clontarf.
We had a group of 44 members from the O'Brien Estate Wine Club - about half were O'Briens, with the other half being others of Irish descent and friends curious about Ireland. To say we had a fabulous time was an understatement! We had an 8 day guided bus tour of Ireland with an absolutely hilarious - and knowledgeable - tour guide name Sheamus.
We would see 2 major sites each day, with lunch at a pub or restaurant in between and then finish afterwards with a dinner each evening, followed by serious pub crawling afterwards. Live Irish music, quaint pubs, pints of Guinness, walking cobble-stoned streets, and making great friends. Being in a group of people where you know your are likely related in a way is a warm experience.
From the early history of Ireland preserved in Irish Crosses and ruins of cathedrals, to the famine walls and homesteads where Irish tenants were evicted to lose their families on "coffin ships", and to the great castles of the O'Briens, we saw amazing things.
We hope you can join us for our next Annual Pilgrimage, scheduled for October 2017.
